I looked with sadness at my dad after his second eye surgery proved futile. He would forever be blind in his right eye. The disappointment seemed crushing to me. But Dad is strong.
With a smile he looked at me, took an imaginary golf swing and said,
“Oh Honey, it’s okay, it won’t mess up my golf game at all!”
Then he said something profound,
“Besides, in the game of life, there are always compensations.”
“Compensations?”
“Yes, compensations. For everything that seems bad or weak, there is something good and strong to make up for it.”
There are always compensations.
I had never thought of it that way before. In my world, “compensation,” was a word that meant, “How much you get paid.” But as usual, it was time to see things differently.
There is strength available for every perceived weakness. Having a winning mindset happens when you can assess your weaknesses and then call upon those compensating strengths.
For Dad, just being able to play golf made up for the tragedy of becoming the one-eyed player. He hit a hole-in-one not too long later.
On a sports team, we have players with strengths that compensate for other players’ weaknesses.
In a marriage, instead of fighting over our differences, we can see them as compensations. We are stronger together.
I have a favorite Bible verse about the ultimate compensation. This is written on an index card, and attached to my computer monitor,
“…The word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision saying, ‘Fear not Abram. I am your shield, your abundant compensation and your reward shall be exceedingly great.’” (Genesis 15:1 Amplified Bible)
God himself is our ultimate compensation. He makes up for our weaknesses. That leaves us without excuse!
When I am weak, he is my strength. When I am broken he is my wholeness. When I am doubtful, he is faith. When I am fearful, he is bold. When I feel like a loser, he is my victory. When I am sad, he is my joy. When I am lost, he is The Way. When I am ashamed, he is my righteousness. When I am poor, he is rich.
How about you?
What weaknesses are holding you back? Now return, and look again.
“In the game of life, there are always compensations.”
Look for the compensations – strength is available for every weaknesses. You are called and equipped for victory.
Now, go play.
I’m in your corner,
